Reading Role models can have a really positive impact on the reading behaviours of children. In this article, we are going to focus on how, as a parent, you can be a great reading role model for your child. If you would like to find out more about Reading Role models, take a look here.

1) Be a visible reader

Allow your child to catch you reading, or reading to unwind. This helps them to understand that reading can be a relaxing and enjoyable activity.

2) Access to Texts

Remember that reading means books, non-fiction, comics and whatever you can get access to. It's important that your child understands that all reading material has the same value, if they are reading it for pleasure. Consider joining a local library, or borrowing books from school, or organising a book swap with other parents.

3) Read Aloud

Make sure to make time to read aloud to and with your child. There are huge benefits to reading aloud with your child, even when they can read independently. It's also a great opportunity to share what you like about the book and to talk about it together.

4) Make Reading a Priority

If possible create a cosy space at home where you can read together. Try and read together regularly, maybe even with some biscuits, so your child sees it as an enjoyable activity.

5) Recommend Books

Finding books to recommend your child could be tricky, so ask the child's teacher and other parents what their children have been reading recently. Or head to your local library or book shop and ask for some advice. Always though encourage your child to choose their own reading material.
