Reading rate is the speed at which a child reads. Together with reading comprehension, reading accuracy and reading expression it contributes to reading fluency. Here are some ideas of ways to increase your child's reading rate whilst ensuring they enjoy the journey.

Read Aloud Together Regularly

Reading aloud is one of the best ways you support your child boost their reading rate. Aim to set aside time each day to read aloud together. This allows you to model fluent reading while your child follows along. Take turns reading pages aloud; you can go first to model appropriate pacing and expression, making it easier for your child to imitate.

Use Audiobooks

Using high quality audiobooks can be very helpful when looking to boost your child’s reading rate. Before purchasing any audiobooks it is a good idea to listen to the sample to check you are happy with the reading rate (and check the content first). Good quality audiobooks can help your child to understand the reading rate that they should be aiming for. If possible, follow along with the physical text as the words are read.

Find Books Your Child Enjoys

Choose books and texts that genuinely interest your child. Or even better, encourage them to choose their own reading material (with guidance). When children are excited about what they’re reading, they are more likely to practise. This will then improve their reading rate over time.

Final Thoughts

Reading rate is an important part of reading fluency. When it comes to reading rate, reading aloud together is important. Showing your child an appropriate reading rate yourself, with the support of other adults and audiobooks can make a big difference.
