National Storytelling Week: Common FAQs Answered

With National Storytelling Week quickly approaching we thought we would share a bit of information about what it is and how you can celebrate it as a school.
What is National Storytelling Week?
It is an annual event run by the National Literacy Trust to celebrate the power of sharing stories. These stories can help us to understand someone else's perspective, teach us about the world, to relax, feel empathy and so much more! The theme for this year is Reimagine the World!
When does it take place?
The date changes slightly each year but in 2025 it will take place from Saturday 1st February until Sunday 9th February.
The National Literacy Trust will be holding free online workshops. One by Joseph Coelho inspired by his picture book Our Tower. There is also a whole week's worth of content to support you with your lesson planning. Another author workshop, this time for Key Stage 2 pupils will be led by Tolá Okogwu.
How else could you celebrate National Storytelling Week?
Some schools are using a picture book across the school, for example, wordless picture books like Flotsam and using this as a tool for children to create their own stories.
Others are using picture books with words, that they read to the children and then are asking children to tell their own version of the story to a parent in school.
Some schools will use a prop as a hook for children to create their own stories.
Sometimes schools will use story cubes, or role play.
