Prosody (Reading Expression): How to Guide

What is reading expression?

Prosody means to read with expression, an appropriate rhythm, tone, pitch, pauses and stresses for the text. It is one of the three key components of reading fluency.

Why is reading expression important?

Reading with expression can help to convey the meaning of texts. For example, when reading a question or statement aloud, the intonation will be different. Especially as sometimes depending on the intonation a statement can be a just that or a question.

Reading with expression conveys emotions, for example, if someone is particularly happy or upset by something.

In a similar way, using pauses can emphasise particular points in a text. Knowing what is important in a passage can help with the comprehension of texts.

If appropriate expression is used when reading aloud then it can help to improve the comprehension of texts. If children have a better comprehension of texts then they are more likely to enjoy the texts, rather than focussing on decoding the meaning of them.
