Reading accuracy is the ability to read the text correctly, with few errors. It’s important for a number of reasons:

  • When children read accurately, they feel more confident in their reading ability.

  • It means that children can focus more on the comprehension of the text.

  • If children are able to read accurately then it encourages them to explore books more often. It then makes it more likely that they will choose to read for pleasure.

Here are some ways to support your child with their reading accuracy.

1. Model Fluent Reading

One of the best ways to teach your child is by giving them an example of what fluent reading looks like. Read aloud to them regularly, using expressive tones and varied pacing. This not only shows them what fluent reading sounds like but also helps them understand how to show meaning through their expression. Take a look here if you would like to find out more about reading fluency.

2. Encourage Visual Tracking

Ask your child to follow along with their finger as you read. This helps them to connect the spoken words with the written text, improving word recognition and accuracy.

3. Practise Reading Aloud Together

Reading aloud together allows your child to practise pacing and accuracy whilst feeling supported. In the Revised Reading Framework,  it said that if adults reading aloud regularly it can also encourage sustained, voluntary reading!

4. Re-read Favourite Books

Encourage your child to occasionally re-read their favourite books. When children are familiar with texts this can boost their confidence and fluency, making it easier for them to read accurately.

Make sure though that they are exposed to a range of genres and types of text. Where possible try and involve your child in selecting the books you read together. Choice is important when it comes to reading for pleasure.

6. Ask Questions and Make Connections

Ask your child questions about the text and encourage them to relate it to their own lives. This not only enhances comprehension but also makes reading a more personal experience.

Final Thoughts

Reading aloud and reading together are important when supporting your child’s reading accuracy. You might find that these strategies not only improve their reading accuracy but also help them to develop a love of reading.
