A pile of books.

In the Revised Reading Framework, the government recommended schools start book clubs as a way of encouraging reading for pleasure. So, we thought we’d share some things to consider before starting your book club.

Define the purpose

  1. Who are you aiming the book club at?

  2. What type of texts will you read?

  3. Could you consider a comic or manga book club? (Remember that there are lots of different types of readers and interests.)

  4. Or would you like a theme, for example, space or dinosaurs and choose the texts from that point?

  5. How are you going to fund the book club and source reading materials?

Book Club Size

Think about how many pupils you would like to join. Having a minimum and maximum number of pupils is often a good idea. Keep in mind that with smaller groups you may have more in-depth conversations about the books. With larger groups there are going to probably be a wider range of opinions. It is important that all pupils feel that they can contribute.

When and where will the book club take place?

It can be hard to find uninterrupted time in an already busy curriculum. So consider how often the book club will meet, for how long and where. Wherever possible, the book club should not feel rushed, as this will impact discussions. Depending on the age of the pupil, you might want to consider shorter or longer sessions.

Who will run the book club?

It is important that whoever runs the book club, whether it is you or someone else, is passionate and knowledgeable about the books the pupils are reading.  Some schools have started pupil led book clubs. Whoever you choose, enthusiasm is crucial.

Could you invite guests to your book club? Perhaps parents or volunteers to share books that they love or something that they have experienced? One teacher we know invited a grandparent to theirs as they were reading a book about the Second World War. The grandparent told the pupils about her experiences living through the war.
