World Book Day

As World Book Day is around the corner, we thought we'd share some ideas of in-school competitions/ games.

The Masked Reader

Encourage pupils to learn a passage from their favourite book. Ask them to recite the book passage, wearing a mask. Encourage pupils to guess the reader and the book. Ask the pupils, if possible to bring in the book, so children who are interested can browse the books at the end.

Story in a Box

During the week of World Book Day, encourage children to create a scene from their favourite book, using a shoe box and other materials. Then on World Book Day create an exhibition of these and encourage pupils to retell the story to other pupils.

Decorate a Door

This works particularly well in two or three form entry schools. Ask each year group to decorate the class door, themed around a book or an author. Encourage pupils to guess the book or author, or just use it to promote discussions about books.

Create a Comic/Graphic Novel

As World Book Day is about reading, you could also think of other forms of reading, like comics. You could run a competition where pupils create their own graphic novel or comic book. You could then exhibit these and ask pupils to explain them to other pupils.

Pageticker and World Book Day

Pageticker, is an online reading record, designed to support teachers and parents with developing a reading for pleasure culture in their schools. At a glance, teachers can see books that are being enjoyed by their class. Why not trial Pageticker for free today?
